quikmaps — upgrades and fixes

Hi everyone,

Just finished a set of bug-fixes and upgrades to quikmaps. Most of the changes are invisible, but a couple you’ll notice: a) zoom slider instead of zoom buttons in the map editor, and b) you can now place any html code (links, embedded videos, photos) into marker info windows and text labels.

I’ve sketched a map of the Mount Everest region that shows the trekking route to base camp, with an embedded video from Google videos, and a marker over the summit with a link to mounteverest.net. You can find it at http://quikmaps.com/show/1454

Enjoy!

Thanks for creating Quikmaps. You have an excellent set of features. I have been creating some maps using Windows Live Local, but so much more is possible on your site. I would like to create more maps but I am concerned that my work would be lost if the site went down. What would be nice would be the capability to export my data in some standard format so that I had a backup copy.

    Regards

    Roger

You have left and right directions arrows. But, up and down arrows for directions would be great as well

Being able to embed pictures, video would take it to the next level - love it so far!

Wow. Embedding pictures, video, sound, links… this is wonderful - so promising. Thanks.

Wow, lots of questions for me to answer.

First, Roger, I’m trying to keep the site up as much as possible. Most of the past server problems have been worked out by switching to dreamhost, so I’m expecting a more stable future…

Tim, the answer is ruby on rails, running on Apache with FastCGI and a MySQL database. There’s a small amount of php sprinkled throughout, and, of course, plenty of javascript. Your initial guess was essentially correct :)

Finally, vp, I take your suggesting of up/down arrows to heart. I’d like to get a collection of icon groups, but I’m still working on getting permission for those.

Thanks for the support and happy doodling!

I don’t know much about coding. Could you explain how to embed a video and link into a marker info window?

    Great site!

    What a fantastic tool!
Could it be possible to change the color of the draw lines and the scribbles? You know, to show for example a trip : day1 in blue, day 2 in green , ….
I also noticed that the markers can be positionned very precisely, but the text labels are a little floating, depending on the zoom level.
    Thank you forthat great job.

Jay, a link looks like this:

    quikmaps is cool!

As for a video, just paste in the ‘embed’ or ‘your site’ code from utube or google videos.

Vado, coloured lines is near the top of my ‘to-do’ list. As for the text labels, I’m aware of this issue, and looking in to it.

This is a great tool that I discovered at work the other day.

However, I am a Mac user and I can’t seem to update or edit any of my maps using either Safari or an old verison of IE. Is this a known bug and is it something that is likely to be fixed.

Good work with it all, it is a very impressive and powerful mapping tool!

Since my previous comment above, I have downloaded Firefox, which appears to work well with the site. The problems appear to be with Safari and IE only.

    Hey Ken,

Great work on this site — loving the Quikmaps. Any plans to take it to the new version of Google’s API? I’m addicted to double-click zooming:
