quikmaps — cool maps and blog postings
Just a little quikmaps update for those following this blog… quikmaps has been public now for about 2 weeks, and I’m proud to say the database now contains over 4500 maps. That’s, umm, more than 300 per day.
As promised, here’s some of the more interesting ones I’ve seen, either that quik-mappers have sent to me or that I’ve found in the blogosphere:
- Searching for Ralph “Bucky” Phillips
- Embedded photos and video at Digital Signposts
- Tarbet to Glasgow Cycle Path
- Constellation Orion over Southern Utah
- Bryan Dolnik’s US army recollections
- Work to Lake Demark (where google’s driving directions fail)
Plus, here’s a few other quikmaps appearances from around the web:
- Google Maps Mania
- Emily Chang’s eHub
- Cool Hunting
- Digg!! (hit the front page at digg.com twice, shutting down the server once…)
Enjoy!

Thanks for this. You made it almost TOO easy. Been looking at lakes and volcanoes in the Philippine Archipelago…

I’ve created a sight seeing tour of Florence, using quikmaps, flickr and wikipedia.

The main problem I’ve found is editing the HTML for the pins, especially once you get a few images and links in there you need to use a text editor as the edit box is too small. I found that it was best to compose then HTML in a blog editing tool (I used the one built into Flock) where you can edit it in WYSIWYG mode and then copy the HTML to past into the pin on the map.
The end result it very good.

Hi Ken,
I’m getting ‘403 Forbidden’ from the quikmaps site. Any chance you can bring it back?
Thanks
